Dental Care & Presentation

“Why should I visit the dentist?  My teeth feel great!  Plus, it costs too much.”  These statements echo a common belief that a dentist visit is reserved only for that nagging toothache.  I would like to challenge this belief because like much in life, we take care of things that we value.  This applies to that shiny car, your house, your marriage, and yes, your teeth.

Let us consider the value of teeth.  A person’s smile is a defining, expressive and beautiful part of the face. Being able to proudly smile is important to personal confidence - be it in a graduation photograph, job interview, or a business presentation.  At your next meal, consider the range of culinary delights that would be missed without healthy teeth. As you pick up your phone, appreciate the ease in which you talk - something that yes, your teeth play an important role in.  With proper care, these teeth can continue to serve you throughout a lifetime.  You may ask, “I know about brushing my teeth, but what else do my teeth need?”

Teeth need cleaning and rest.  No they do not get tired but they get dirty!  Bacteria are responsible for cavities. Bacteria thrive in an acidic environment, which is exactly what eating and drinking (anything but water) creates in the mouth. This is why brushing after meals is important.  Also, try to limit eating or drinking between meals - let your teeth rest!

As far as cleaning - brush teeth at least twice a day for two minutes, and pull out the floss daily.  Finally, even champion toothbrushers cannot clean everything, so schedule regular dental visits.  This includes cleanings and exams with screening for early detection of tooth and gum disease.  Following these steps will help keep your beautiful smile healthy and lasting for years to come.
